Lydell Tyrone Payne was called from labor to reward on Thursday, September 14, 2023. Born on February 24, 1961
at The University of Virginia Hospital. He was the son of the late George Lewis Payne, Sr. and the late Barbara Jean
Overton Payne of Palmyra, VA. He was preceded in death by his sister Demetrice S. Golden. Lydell attended Fluvanna
County Public Schools; he graduated in 1979. He graduated from Virginia State University magna cum laude with a
degree in BusinessAdministration with a concentration in Finance in 1983.
Lydell was the Finance Director at the Community Energy Conservation Program in Charlottesville, VA. In 1988 Lydell
and his brother George decided to start Payne Brothers Concrete Contractors, Inc. In 1996 Architectural Construction &
Design was started. Lydell went on to work for the City of Charlottesville until 2018. Lydell worked at Westminster-
Canterbury of the Blue Ridge, where he was celebrating his 5 years of service.
Lydell joined the Evergreen Baptist Church at a young age. He was a member of two organizations, Modest Phi Modest
Fraternity Inc.; Alpha Alpha Alpha Chapter of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity Inc.
He leaves to cherish his memory his devoted and loving wife of 25 years Benita T. Payne, two sons Lydell Tyrone Payne,
Jr., LaVandrius McCrae, one daughter Denisha Fauntleroy, four grandchildren, one granddaughter Jasmin, three grandsons
George, III (Tre), Jaceyon and Ace, one brother George L. Payne, Jr. (wifeAnna), eight brothers-in-law Charles
(Demetrice, deceased), John (Ruth), Larry (deceased), Thomas (Teresa), Darryl, Lavon (Joyce), Jerome and Calvin
(Melvina). Three sisters-in-law Brenda, Jackie (Warren), Nadine (Eric), and a host of other relatives and friends.
Lydell had a love of music and was a member of several bands as a drummer and enjoyed jam sessions with his brother
and friends. He also enjoyed college basketball and boxing. He had a love of fishing and he shared it with his children and
grandchildren, as well as the numerous fishing trips with his brother and friends.
He will lie in repose from 12:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. on Wednesday, September 20, 2023, at J. F. Bell Funeral Home Chapel,
108 6th St. N.W., Charlottesville, VA.
Funeral services will be held on Thursday, September 21, 2023, at 12:00 p.m., at Evergreen Baptist Church, Palmyra, VA.
Interment will follow in the church cemetery.
