Richard Gavin Marsden, known to most as Dick, died after a short illness on January 12, 2023. He was born on January 5, 1933 to
Robert Durwood Marsden and Agnes McAlmont Marsden in Lincoln, R.I.
Dick is survived by his daughter, Leigh Ann Kremer, his son-in law, Christopher Kremer, and their children, Allie, Victoria and
Ben of Charlottesville. Dick’s second daughter is Lynn Marsden ofAlexandria, Va. He is also survived by his sister, Christina
Marsden Gillis of Berkeley, Calif.
Dick was preceded in death by his wife, Lillian Payne Marsden; his parents; his brother, Robert Durwood Marsden, Jr.; and his
sister Phyllis Marsden Paradis.
Dick grew up in Lincoln, R.I. He graduated from East Pawtucket High School in Pawtucket, R.I. in 1950 and The Rhode Island
School of Design, Providence, R.I with a degree in Textile Engineering in 1954. Dick was the fifth generation in the textile
industry in his family going back to England.
After college, Dick served in the United StatesArmy in Germany. When he returned, he was employed by Avon Mills and
Berkshire Hathaway Inc. Dick moved South to work forAllied Chemical in Hopewell Va. He met the love of his life Lillian in
Hopewell, they married on June 27, 1964 and spent the next 56 years side by side. They later moved to Charlottesville where Dick
was employed by Frank IX and Sons. When most of the textile industry left the United States, Dick studied accounting at PVCC.
He was employed by Tiger Fuel of Charlottesville doing accounting until he retired in 1995.
Dick attended First United Methodist Church of Charlottesville serving as an office volunteer, Sunday School leader and member
of the Finance Committee. He was Treasurer of the First United Methodist Preschool for five years.
Dick and Lil loved to travel, visiting historical sites and National Parks. His daughters claim they have been to every battlefield
east of the Mississippi. They traveled out West, toAlaska, and Great Britain. They enjoyed University of Virginia football games
and traveling to many away games and bowl games.
He served as Voting Chief at Alumni Hall Precinct for the City of Charlottesville for many years.
Agraveside service will be at Monticello Memory Gardens on Saturday, January 21, 2023 at 2 p.m. Acelebration of his life will
take place at a later date at First United Methodist Church in Charlottesville.
Dick’s family would like to thank the staff of Our Lady of Peace for their devoted friendship and care during the time he lived
there. They would also like to thank the staff and doctors of the Emergency Department, 5 South and 3 East at the University of
Virginia Hospital for their extraordinary care and compassion during his last days.
