Ray Wesley Koon, 84, of Charlottesville, passed away on Tuesday, August 15, 2023 at Rosewood Village at Greenbrier in Char-
lottesville.
Born January 3, 1939 in Zanesville, OH he was the son of the late John A. Koon and Dorothy (Stewart) German. On June 16,
1961 he married the love of his life, Nellie May Campbell. The two shared 62 wonderful years of marriage.
Ray was a U.S Army veteran having served his country honorably for two years in Germany. Prior to retirement, he was em-
ployed by the City of Charlottesville for 25 years where he lastly worked as a maintenance superintendent. Ray was a member
of Rockfish Presbyterian Church where he had served as a past deacon and elder. He was a member of the King Solomon’s
Lodge AF & AM, Lynchburg Scottish Rites and Boy Scout Troop 42 where he most notably served as Scout Master. Ray had a
servant’s heart and he along with his wife, Nellie, participated in two mission trips to Haiti. He will be remembered for his whit-
tling skills, his love for his family, and community.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Charles “Bucky” Madison; stepfather, Robert German; step-
mother, Wilma Koon; three sisters, Patsy Burns, Sandra Kramer, and Sonja German; aunt, Mayme Hock; and uncle, Dick Koon
and his wife, Jeannie.
Survivors include his loving wife, Nellie Koon “Koonie” of Charlottesville; sons, Doug Koon and wife, Lydia, of Charlottesville,
and Danny Mayo and wife, Cindy, of Nelson County; daughter-in-law, Shelia Madison of Lusby, MD; grandchildren, Ryan Madi-
son and wife, Stephanie, Taylor Madison, Dillon Koon, and Jenna Koon; great-granddaughter, Lynnsie Madison; sister, Sylvia
Seal and husband, Howard, of Cincinnati, OH; and a number of nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. on Sunday, August 20, 2023 at the Waynesboro Chapel of Reyn-
olds Hamrick Funeral Homes, 618 W. Main St., Waynesboro.
A funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, August 21, 2023 at Rockfish Presbyterian Church, 5016 Rockfish Valley
Highway, Nellysford, with Rev. Inger O. Manchester officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family asks those
planning to attend the services to dress casually as that would have been Ray’s wishes.
The family would like to give a special heartfelt thank you to the entire staff of Rosewood Village at Greenbrier and specifically
the Memory Care Unit as well as Hospice of the Piedmont for their love and care of Ray.
