Charles ‘Chuck’ Hudson Jones


Charles “Chuck” Hudson Jones, 89, of Harrisonburg, died July 21, 2011, in Har­risonburg.

Mr. Jones was born Dec. 21, 1921, in Ari­zona, to the late Col. Charles H. Jones and Rosa Emma Clark Jones.

Mr. Jones served in World War II, attaining the rank of Captain in the U.S. Army be­fore being wounded a fourth and final time and medically retired from service. He served in the 47th Infantry Regiment of the 9th Division and his personal decora­tions include: Silver Star for Gallantry, Bronze Star, and four Purple Hearts, as well as two Presidential Unit Ci­tations for distinguished ac­tion at Freuzenberg Castle and the crossing at Rema­gen Bridge. He worked in customer service for United Airlines for over 30 years, retiring as supervisor at Rea­gan International Airport, and was responsible for establishing the first “Red Car­pet Clubs” at both Washing­ton National and Dulles In­ternational Airports.

After retirement, he amassed what was consid­ered the most extensive and complete collection of Civil War artillery fuses in the country, winning numerous awards, including the presti­gious Stanley S. Phillips Memorial Award. He later wrote a book detailing his collections, (Artillery Fuses of the Civil War), which he published in 2001.

Mr. Jones is survived by his wife, Phyllis Brooks Jones; daughters, Patricia J. Harkins and husband, Thomas G. Harkins, and Bar­bara L. Mancini; and sister, Rose J. Fugitt.

A memorial service will be held 2 p.m. Saturday, July 30, 2011, at Meredith Chapel at Sunnyside Retire­ment Community. The Rev. Paul O’Gorek will conduct the service. Burial will be held at a later date at Arling­ton National Cemetery.
