Charles “Chuck” Hudson Jones, 89, of Harrisonburg, died July 21, 2011, in Harrisonburg.
Mr. Jones was born Dec. 21, 1921, in Arizona, to the late Col. Charles H. Jones and Rosa Emma Clark Jones.
Mr. Jones served in World War II, attaining the rank of Captain in the U.S. Army before being wounded a fourth and final time and medically retired from service. He served in the 47th Infantry Regiment of the 9th Division and his personal decorations include: Silver Star for Gallantry, Bronze Star, and four Purple Hearts, as well as two Presidential Unit Citations for distinguished action at Freuzenberg Castle and the crossing at Remagen Bridge. He worked in customer service for United Airlines for over 30 years, retiring as supervisor at Reagan International Airport, and was responsible for establishing the first “Red Carpet Clubs” at both Washington National and Dulles International Airports.
After retirement, he amassed what was considered the most extensive and complete collection of Civil War artillery fuses in the country, winning numerous awards, including the prestigious Stanley S. Phillips Memorial Award. He later wrote a book detailing his collections, (Artillery Fuses of the Civil War), which he published in 2001.
