Mrs. Annie Keyes Johnson was born on October 29, 1946, age 76, of Charlottesville, VA, gained her wings on September
14, 2023, in Winston-Salem, NC. She was preceded in death by her husband, Lindsey Dupratt Johnson, whom she was
married to for 43 years. Her father, Frank H. Keyes, MotherAnnie Mills Keyes, her brother, Frank H. Keyes Jr., and her
sister, Francine Charlotte Groom preceded her in death.
Ms. Annie attended Burley High School and graduated from Lane High School in Charlottesville, VA. After high school
she worked at theA& P grocery store, then onto Bell Telephone Company, which later became Sprint Phone Company.
She worked there for over 35 years until she was injured. She was the firstAfrican American woman to become a pole
climber for that phone company. Ms.Annie was dedicated and hardworking, she loved her family very much.
She was a member of Mt. Zion FirstAfrican Baptist Church, where she was a soprano in the choir and she could play that
tambourine like nobody's business.
She leaves to celebrate her life and cherish her memory one daughter, Phillisco Smith Alexander; one son, Harry Lindsay
Dupratt Johnson IV; four granddaughters, Sade (Collin) Nance, Ulanda Smith, NatashaAlexander, and Gabrielle
Alexander; one grandson, Harry Jonathan Dupratt Johnson V; three sisters, Teresa Walker (Fletcher),Katie Keyes, and
JoAnn Stephens; one brother, Eric Fultz; 10 great-grandchildren; numerous nieces; and nephews and a host of other
relatives and friends.
She had two very special caregivers, Kevin Jackson and Theresa Gayten.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, September 23, 2023, at Mt. Zion First African Baptist Church. She
will lie in repose at the church one hour prior to the services. Interment will be held at a later date in Culpeper National
Cemetery.
