Horst Josef Huttner. 87, of Mt. Jackson Virginia passed away on Thursday, January 19,
2023, in Front Royal.
Horst was born on June 4, 1935 in Wurzburg Germany and had a front row seat as a kid
during WW2. He watched his town get bombed day and night. He and his immediate
family survived.
During his adolescence, he was working as a cabinet maker in Germany and then joined
the French Foreign Legion at the age of 17. Adventure turned to war in Vietnam in 1952.
He was shot and captured in the war fighting the Vietcong. He escaped death and
ended up in Algiers in North Africa at an army hospital.
He came to America with only $100 to his name with his beloved wife Katharina in 1961.
He worked various jobs when they first immigrated before finally making a career
working at a company called Blair, Inc., building exhibits, models, and trade shows, and
eventually becoming foreman of the company. He was a proud German yet loved
America more than most Americans.
He called the Mount Jackson area his home, with a nice house and acreage in Getz
Corner. He was loved by all who knew him. He was a very hard-working family man who
loved and enjoyed all of his family at gatherings. He had a very mischievous and funny
personality and was quick with numerous one liners. He will be greatly missed.
He is survived by his son Harald and his wife Cheryl, daughter Judy and her husband
Steve, daughter Hilde and her husband Ruben, five grandchildren and two great
grandchildren.
There will be no formal viewing or gathering. Please do not send flowers. If you would
like to donate to Wounded Warriors on his behalf, feel free. Dellinger Funeral Home
