Leonard Hamburger, 83, a resident of Waynesboro, VA, passed away Tuesday morning, September 26, 2023. He was born in
Norfolk, VA, where he met Kitty, his wife of 66 years. He was a devoted husband and father, and a loving PopPop to his
granddaughters and great grandchildren. He loved his family with all his heart.
In addition to his parents, Maurice and Bessie Kathleen (Blanchard) Hamburger, he was preceded in death by his brother, Leroy
Hamburger; and sister, Frances Finner. Surviving are his loving wife, Kathryn “Kitty” Hamburger; daughter, Cindy Rutledge
and husband Wendell; three grandchildren, Carrie Del Gallo and husband Justin, Emily Rutledge and Rachel Rutledge; two
great-grandchildren, Evelyn and Jackson Del Gallo; two nephews, Jonathan Finner and Jeff Hamburger; and, not to forget, his
granddog “Della”.
Leonard was a dedicated employee of J.J. Haines, Inc. for 42 years. He worked his way to the management level and was very
proud of his contributions to the company. During his retirement years, he worked at AutoZone and O’Reilly’s of Waynesboro,
where he met several close friends.
He loved sports, especially baseball. He was a faithful Yankee’s fan to the end. Through the years, he enjoyed coaching men’s
softball and little league basketball. He attended his granddaughters’soccer games and other events. Leonard enjoyed bowling
in the Senior League in Waynesboro and Staunton with his wife and all of their friends.
Leonard had a great sense of humor and a wonderful ability to tell stories. He had a passion for taking care of his lawn and cars,
and loved cherry Slurpees and chocolate milkshakes. He leaves behind many memories and will be missed greatly by all who
knew him.
Upon his wishes, there will be no services held. In lieu of flowers, the family asks those wishing to make a donation in the
memory of Leonard Hamburger to the Shenandoah Hospice House or the Health Equipment Loan Program in Churchville, VA.
The family would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to the caring staff of Shenandoah Hospice and Shenandoah Hospice
House.
