Joann S. Gambill

Joann Shomo Gambill, 75, of Alleghany Avenue in Harrisonburg, died Sunday, Oct. 3, 2004, at her home.

Mrs. Gambill was born Sept. 27, 1929, in Harrisonburg, and was the daughter of the late Glen Keller Sr. and Eva Brown Shomo.

She graduated from Harrisonburg High School and attended Longwood College and Madison College. She was a charter member of the First Church of the Nazarene in Harrisonburg in 1951 and the Mount Crawford Dayspring Nazarene Church in 1992. She served in many areas of the church, including Sunday school teacher of primaries, adult Bible teacher and was pianist at both churches for over 50 years.

Mrs. Gambill received two distinguished service awards. One in 1977 and one in 2003. She was a homemaker, whose interests include painting, piano, sewing, flower arranging and gardening. She did tailoring and alterations for many years and was a bridal consultant and seamstress for Konley Fashions in Harrisonburg.

On March 4, 1939, she married Hamilton Scherer Gambill, who survives.

Also surviving are a son, Geron P. Gambil of Fayetteville, N.C.; two daughters, Jo Ellen Sharpes Barnett of Nashville, Tenn., and Scherel G. Fisher of Fort Mill, S.C.; a sister, Carolyn S. Vernon of Greensboro, N.C.; three brothers, Glen K. Shomo Jr. of Fort Myers, Fla., Richard N. Shomo of Greensboro, N.C., and Philip D. Shomo of Cottonwood, Tenn., and eight grandchildren.

A graveside service will be held 10 a.m. Thursday at Eastlawn Memorial Gardens near Harrisonburg. A memorial service will be held 11 a.m. Thursday at Dayspring Nazarene Church with Pastor Tim Thomas and the Revs. Richard Shomo and Philip Shomo officiating.

The family will receive friends from 7-9 p.m. Wednesday at the Kyger Funeral Home in Harrisonburg.
