Hollis T. DeArmond

Mr. Hollis T. (De) DeArmond, age 81, of Flowery Branch, Ga., passed away Thursday, June 24, 2004, after a prolonged illness. The son of John O. and Esther Mae DeArmond, he was born in Corinth, Ark. on Dec. 28, 1922.

He graduated from Monticello, Ark., High School, attended the University of Mississippi on a football scholarship, served in World War II as a pilot and played professional baseball in the Brooklyn Dodgers organization. He was a state trooper with the Virginia State Police for eight years.

He joined the National Automobile Theft Bureau (now the National Insurance Crime Bureau) and retired as manager of their Pacific Coast Division, San Francisco, Calif. in 1982. He then returned to the Atlanta area, where he has lived for over 35 years.

A loving husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle and friend, he is survived by his wife of 50 years, Barbara Workman DeArmond; daughter, Yvonne DeArmond Chappell; granddaughter, Whitney J. Chappell, all of Flowery Branch; sisters, Bernice Lawson of Maumelle, Ark., Leola D. Burnham and Atheleen Holland, both of Tampa, Fla.; six nephews; seven nieces and one great-niece.

He was preceded in death by his parents, son, Michael David DeArmond, brother, Robert L. DeArmond, Little Rock, Ark., son-in-law, W. Adrian Chappell Jr. and a nephew, David O. DeArmond.

A memorial service was held Monday June 28, 2004, at 4 p.m. at Memorial Park South Chapel. The family received friends Sunday from 2 to 4 p.m. June 27 and one hour prior to service on Monday. Officiating were Pastor Charles Winters and James Mills. Inurnment was at Oconee Hill Cemetery in Athens, Ga.
