Life Reflections
“I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race,
I have kept the faith” - Timothy 4:7
Brewer Lee Clark was born on March 3, 1929, to the late Urlin and Leola (King) Clark in St. Paul, Minnesota. He was peacefully called from
labor to reward on Sunday, January 29, 2023, at his home in Charlottesville, Va., with his beloved wife, Pauline, by his side. Brewer’s loving son,
Timothy Brewer Clark, preceded him in death.
Brewer accepted Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior at an early age. He utilized his gifts and talents to uplift the kingdom of God and worked
faithfully in the master’s vineyard, doing God’s mighty works and his will.
Brewer and Pauline were united in holy matrimony on June 21, 1975. To this union, Brewer became the bonus dad to Rodney and John Tyree.
Growing up as an only child, Brewer shared that he missed having siblings, however, once married to Pauline, he gained three brothers, two
sisters, and a host of nieces and nephews.
Brewer received his early education in the St. Paul public school system. After graduating from high school, he attended the University of
Minnesota where he majored in history. After a year, his yearning and love of music brought him to Howard University in Washington, D.C.,
where he majored in piano, earning him a Bachelor’s degree in music. With a desire to serve his country, Brewer then joined the U.S. Army,
serving two years at the rank of 2nd Lieutenant and receiving the National Defense Award.
After the Army, he continued his journey into music. Brewer attended Catholic University majoring in music and earning a Master of Music
degree. He continued to broaden his love of music and hone his skills with courses at the University Maryland for an additional two years.
Brewer once shared that the highlight of his career was teaching band and chorus in the D.C. public schools. Brewer was a renowned music
teacher at Hart Middle School in Washington, D.C., for 29 years. Even today, many of his students fondly remember participating in the Hart
Middle School band or singing in the chorus under his direction.
From 1958 to 2019, Brewer served as Musical Director and/or organist at several churches, including Asbury Methodist Church, Albright
Methodist Church, Atonement Episcopal Church, Pilgrim AME, and Clinton United Methodist Church.
As a faithful member of Clinton UMC, Brewer served as the Director of the Chancellor Choir for 10 years, and served as the organist for over 30
years. He was well-known for his exquisite Easter and Christmas Cantatas. Brewer also was a trustee, a member of the United Methodist Men, a
Lay-member, a Bible-study teacher, and a United Methodist Emmaus member. He also sponsored several Emmaus members.
Brewer was a regular “Mr. Fixit” handyman and enjoyed woodworking, plumbing, and repairing automobiles. His other hobbies included
photography, computer technology, and watching local sports teams, the Washington Commanders and the Washington Nationals.
Brewer leaves adoring memories that will be cherished by wife, Pauline, who loved and cared for him so attentively; a daughter Pamela Clark;
two bonus sons, Rodney Tyree (Patrice), John Tyree; two grandsons Rodney Tyree, Jr. and Pajja Jackson; three granddaughters, Tawana Tyree,
Tamu Jones, and Storm Lenoir; a loving sister-in-law, Clariece Harris (James); a devoted brother-in-law, Rylan Coles (Julia); and a devoted niece
Clariece “Ressey” Coles, who helped to care for herAunt “Ditney” & Uncle Brewer.
We will truly miss the man and his music; the loving and devoted husband, father, grandfather, and dear friend.
