Else Roswitha Carter, 82, of Woodstock, VA., born August 11, 1940, in Schweinfurt, Germany passed away on Sunday, January 15, 2023.
The family will receive friends and family at the Dellinger Funeral Home on Friday, February 3, 2023, from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. with the
Rosary beginning at 7:30 p.m. A Funeral Mass will be held on Saturday, February 4, 2023, at 11:00 a.m. at St. John Bosco Catholic Church
located at 315 N. Main Street in Woodstock, VA., following with a funeral reception at the Woodstock Moose Lodge located at 152 Moose Road,
Woodstock, Va. Interment will be private at the Massanutten Cemetery.
She is survived by three daughters, Waltraud Barbara Poorman (Dr. Robert O’Neill) of Miami Springs, Fl., Rebecca Ann Carter-Nutter (Jeff) of
Edinburg, VA., Tracy P. Miller (Rick) of Edinburg, VA., and daughter-in-law Selesta Carter of Maurertown, VA.; ten grandchildren, Tyler
Poorman, Molly Poorman, Samantha Poorman Daley (Brian), Shawn Gallo, Billy Jack Dakota Carter, Perla Torres (Johnny), Mariana Kamphues
(Hans), Tanner Orndorff, Abbie Williams (Faheem) and Katie Funkhouser; fourteen great-grandchildren Lake Carter, Bela Vasquez, Samuel
Torres, Christian Torres, Carter Orndorff. Beckam Orndorff, Nevaeh Mays, Amara Williams, Sensei Williams, Ezekiel Williams, Essence
Williams, Eternity Williams, Claire Ritenour, and Paisley Kirby.
She is also survived by a sister Waltraud Schneider (Erich) of Germany, three brothers Gerhard Sauer of Texas, along with Herbert and Detlef
Sauer of Florida, sisters-in-law Brigitte Sauer of Germany and Marjorie Sauer of Florida, ElizabethAnn Hinderer of Florida, Judy Carter and Inez
Coffman of Virginia, and brother-in-law Ronald Carter of South Carolina, along with numerous nieces and nephews and their families scattered
throughout the United States and Europe.
She is predeceased in death by her husband George Robert Carter, Jr., son Billy Jack Carter, mother and stepfather Charles and Barbara Burke,
father Valentine Sauer, brothers Emil, Jacob, Berthold, and Wolfgang Sauer, sister-in-law Nancy Carey, and brothers-in-law Tommy, Billy, and
Jimmy Carter.
She was a member of St. John Bosco Catholic Church, St. Vincent De Paul Society and Past President, a Member of the Church Council, a
Sunday School Teacher for 31 years, a member of the Church Choir, an active member of Senior Cards, and a faithful servant of the church. She
was also a member of the American Legion Auxiliary, Women of the Moose; a former member of the Massanutten Bells Barbershop Choir and the
Masterworks Chorus and a former Girl Scout Leader. Lastly, she was a substantial force behind the creation of the Catholic Outreach Store and
donated her time for 30+ years.
She had a great love for the Shenandoah Valley after moving here in 1969 as it reminded her of Deutschland. She had the opportunity to live in
numerous locations while accompanying her husband on his tours with the US Army to include Minnesota, Texas, North Carolina, and Germany,
where they met. She was extremely proud of becoming a US Citizen in 1967 and had a great love for the US.
She worked at the Blue Bell/Wrangler factory in Woodstock and retired after 30 years and made many, many friends along the way, never to have
met a stranger. She was like a mother to many, but especially to the close friends of her children. She enjoyed cooking her German meals,
especially for others to enjoy, working in her yard, painting ceramics, traveling, meeting friends for lunch, and spending time at the church
allowing her to help others in the community.
She wanted everyone in this world to remember to be kind to the people around you and do special things in your life. It does not have to be
something large, but even just a smile or a touch to let others know you care. A parting thought she wanted us to share with everyone:
Don’t grieve for me, for now I’m free.
I’m following the path God laid for me.
I took His hand when I heard him call.
I turned my back and left it all.
I could not stay another day
To laugh, to love, to work or play.
Tasks left undone must stay that way.
I found that peace at the close of day.
If my parting has left a void,
Then fill it with remembered joy.
A friendship shared, a laugh, a kiss.
Ah yes, these things I too will miss.
Be not burdened with times of sorrow.
I wish you the sunshine of tomorrow.
My life’s been full, I savored much.
Good friends, good times, a loved one’s touch.
Perhaps my time seemed all to brief;
Don’t lengthen it now with undue grief.
Lift up your heart and share with me.
God wanted me now. He set me free.
