Ralph H. Bennett, 87


Ralph Hetler Bennett, 87, of Harrisonburg, died Oct. 14, 2006, in Harrisonburg. Mr. Bennett was born Oct. 29, 1918 in Berwick, Pa., and was the son of the late Frank and Annie Hetler Bennett.

Mr. Bennett was a graduate of Berwick High School and
Scranton-Lackawanna College. Mr. Bennett worked as a Machine Operator at the American Car & Foundry. He served in the United States Army and was a pilot in the Army Air Corps.

Mr. Bennett was an accountant for the Glen-Alden Coal Company in Scranton, Pa. and later worked in the advertising department at Wilkes Barre Sunday Independent Newspaper, where he was one of the yogis (football procrastinators), where he retired as advertising manager.

In 1953, Mr. Bennett moved to Kingston, Pa. and in 1969 was installed as Chairman of the Kingston Authority. He was a member of the Irem Temple Masons Motor Corps, a lifetime member of the VFW and worked
for the Federal Census Bureau. He moved to Timberville, Va. in
1987 and was a volunteer for the Hospice Unit at Rockingham Memorial Hospital.

He enjoyed traveling the United States and abroad and
wintering in Florida.

His wife, Anna Mae (Coombs) Bennett, preceded him in death. Mr. Bennett was also preceded in death by brothers, Royce and Robert, and a sister, Beatrice Shingler.

Mr. Bennett is survived by a companion, Evelyn Hosaflook, Timberville; two daughters, Darcel R. Bennett, Harrisonburg, Sharyl Ann Ross, South Riding, Va.; a brother, Larry Bennett, Bloomsburg, Pa.; a sister, Janice
Zampino, Philadelphia, Pa.; three grandchildren, Brian Ross, Mrs. Michael (Kristin Kay) Peters, Bradley W. Ross; and four great-grandchildren.

A private burial will be held at Elan Memorial Park in Bloomsburg, Pa. with the Rev. Jessie Shingler officiating.
