Edgar H. Bartley Jr., 84


Edgar Hall Bartley Jr., 84, of Dayton, passed away on Tuesday, Dec. 16, 2008, at Rockingham Memorial Hospital.

He was born in Spotswood on Feb. 14, 1924, and was a son of the late Edgar Hall and Mae Sidney (Troxel) Bartley.

Mr. Bartley worked as a teacher for Rockingham County Schools and had taught at Broadway High School and Turner Ashby High School. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II with the 83rd Field Hospital in the 3rd Army. He received his B.A. from Otterbein College in Ohio and a Masters from Madison College. Edgar was first elected to office for the town of Dayton in 1951 and retired after 50 years of service in 2001.

He was united in marriage on June 17, 1950, to Virginia Britton (Ruebush) Bartley, of Dayton.

Surviving in addition to his wife is a daughter, Jacquelyn Britton Wright of Monroe; two sons Douglas Lowell Bartley of White Post, and Jeff Bartley of Clifton Forge; a brother, Thomas Bartley of Waynesboro; three grandchildren, Brandon Driver, Paige Driver, and Christopher Bartley.

A memorial service will be held at Dayton United Methodist Church at 2 p.m. on Saturday, December 20, 2008, with Rev. W.L. (Sonny) Henkel officiating.

The family will receive friends on Friday, Dec. 19, 2008, from 7 to 8 p.m. at the Johnson Funeral Service in Bridgewater.
