D. Janet Bartik, 72


D. Janet Stearn Bartik, 72, of LaVale, Md., died Monday, Dec. 20, 2005, at her residence.

Mrs. Bartik was born Aug. 2, 1933, in Cumberland, Md., and was the daughter of the late William P. and Dorothy Dodd Stearn.

She received a Bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education from Frostburg State University. She also earned a Master’s degree in Art Education from Frostburg State University, where she was a magna cum laude graduate.

She retired from the Allegany County Board of Education with 41 years’ service. She had been an art resource teacher in the county.

She was a member of Emmanuel Episcopal Church, NEA, ACTA, Allegany Area Art Alliance, Allegany County Arts Council, Hampshire County Arts Council, Smithsonian Institute, Cumberland Cultural Foundation, National Geographic Society, and served as the art chairperson for the Rocky Gap Bluegrass Festival.

She was a leader in the arts community for more than 50 years, helping create one of the first art resource curriculums for the Allegany County Schools. She remained active in the Cumberland Cultural Foundation until her death.

Her husband, Gary G. Bartik, survives.

Also surviving are a daughter, Ericableu Lynn Bartik of Cleveland, Ohio, and two sisters, Barbara Partlow of Verona and Gayle Peterman of Harrisonburg.

The Rev. Edward C. Chapman will conduct the funeral 2 p.m. Friday at Emmanuel Episcopal Church, 16 Washington St., Cumberland, Md. Burial will be in Rose Hill Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday at Upchurch Funeral Home, P.A., 202 Greene St., Cumberland, Md.
