Harry N. Arey, 78


Harry Newton Arey, 78, of Bridgewater, died Monday, March 3, 2008, at Rockingham Memorial Hospital.

He was born in Augusta County on June 30, 1929, and was a son of the late Warren W. and Emma (Craun) Arey.

Harry was a retired farmer. He was a life member of the St. Michael's United Church of Christ. He was a graduate of North River High School and attended Catawba College in Salisbury, N.C. He had been a member of the North River Ruritan Club for 45 years.

He was united in marriage July 16, 1950, to Eunice Elane (Argenbright) Arey of Bridgewater.

Surviving in addition to his wife, are a daughter, Kitra (David) Shiflett of Grottoes; four sons, W. Bert (Diane) Arey of Bridgewater, Curtis M. (Sherrie) Arey of Bridgewater, Va., Carl N. (Maxine) Arey of Bridgewater, Va., Sam K. Arey of Mount Sidney, Va. Harry is also survived by 12 grandchildren, Adam (Sara) Shiflett, Jason (Kerri) Shiflett, Heather Arey, Andy Arey, Will Arey, Abby Bare, Autumn Bare, Matthew Arey, Jeremy Arey, Polly Arey, Spencer Arey, and Sarah Arey; three great-grandchildren, Aiden Shiflett, Rylee Shiflett and Luke Shiflett.

He was preceded in death by a sister, Guinevere Alexander Davis, and a daughter-in-law, Susan Moore Arey.

The family will receive friends from 6:30 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday, March 5, 2008, at St. Michael's United Church of Christ.

A graveside service will be conducted at 10 a.m. Thursday at St. Michael's Church Cemetery.

A memorial service will be conducted at St. Michael's United Church of Christ at 7 p.m. on Thursday, March 6, 2008, with the Rev. Hollis Dodge officiating.
