On the morning of Saturday, June 10th, 2023, EmekaAsikabulu Anaza of Harrisonburg, Virginia suddenly departed from this
earthly realm at the age of 41.
Dr. EmekaAsikabulu Anaza was born in Lagos, Nigeria on July 17th,1981 to Ibusa parents. He was born to Dr. John Asikabulu
Anaza and Mrs. Omeba Anaza. Emeka fondly known as Emy and Mekus was known for his smile and peaceful nature. He was a
hard worker with a gracious heart. Emeka excelled at all tasks laid before him and was never afraid of challenges or trying new
things. He handled all phases of life with grace and humor. He was ambitious, charming, and dedicated to his family, friends,
colleagues, and students. After a cultured and humbled upbringing in Lagos, Nigeria, he migrated to Carbondale, Illinois. He
earned his undergraduate and master’s degree from Southern Illinois University, Carbondale, and his PhD from University of
Illinois, Urbana Champaign. After completing his PhD, Emeka settled in Harrisonburg, Virginia as an Associate Professor in the
Hart School of Hospitality, Sport, and Recreation Management, at James Madison University.
His zest for life could not only be seen in his unconditional love for his family and friends but also in his unwavering support to
his colleagues and beloved students alike.As an educator, Dr. Anaza strived to exemplify excellence and thus challenged both his
colleagues and students to exemplify excellence in their academic endeavors.
Emeka not only devoted his life to the Lord but also strived to emulate the example of agape love shown by Christ. As a devout
Catholic, he saw the good in everyone he encountered and strived to help the less privileged in his community. He coached
soccer to children in Harrisonburg and rendered aid to students acclimating to college life at James Madison University. Emeka
was a dedicated son, a beloved brother, nephew, uncle, nephew, cousin, Godfather, and an amazing friend to many. As a devout
Catholic, and a dedicated patron at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church, Harrisonburg VA, Emeka attended mass faithfully. He
loved the outdoors, sports especially soccer, and traveling. He loved teaching and enjoyed traveling abroad as he escorted
students around the globe to various countries making a difference. He mentored countless number of students and positively
touched the lives of many people.As an amazing son, brother, uncle, nephew, Godfather, and friend, Emeka showered his family
and friends with love, kindness, and unwavering support. He often traveled for graduations, weddings, promotions, baptisms, and
family gatherings.
EmekaAnaza was predeceased by his father and his brother. He is survived by his mother, brothers, and sisters. He also leaves
behind a loving host of nephews, nieces, cousins, uncles, aunts, God children, in-laws, and lifelong friends. Emeka will be sorely
missed but forever remains in the hearts and minds of all those he encountered. May his gentle soul rest in peace.
Afuneral mass will be conducted at 9 a.m., Saturday, June 24, 2023, at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church in
Harrisonburg. Interment will follow at Rest Haven Memorial Gardens.
The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the church.Kyger Funeral Home
