Bernice H. Alred

Bernice H. Alred, 97, of McDowell, died Wednesday, Dec. 31, 2003, at Bath County Community Hospital.

Mrs. Alred was born Oct. 30, 1906, in McDowell and was the daughter of the late William Richard and Rose Armstrong Hicklin.

She was a graduate of Madison College and taught public school at Doe Hill. She also had been locally employed by the U.S. Postal Service and had worked as a campground hostess in Georgia.

Her husband, Ben Alred, preceded her in death.

Surviving are two daughters, Mildred Terry of McDowell and Helen Myers of Westminster, Md.; six grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.

The body was cremated.

A memorial service will be conducted 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 10, 2004, at the Obaugh Funeral Home in McDowell.
