William Henry Allen Jr., 95


Mr. William Henry Allen Jr., 95, of Staunton, Va., passed away, Monday, May 4, 2009, while in the company of family members at King’s Daughters’ Community Health & Rehabilitation Center, where he had been a resident since August 2007.

William was born in Grottoes, Va., on April 12, 1914, and was a son of the late William Henry and Katherine (Hollis) Allen.

He worked as a mechanic in the U.S. Army, where he served for five years.

He was twice married. First to Frances Gertrude Allen, then following her death, he married Jane Eva (McCarthy) Allen, who also preceded him in death.

He is survived by five nieces, Thelma A. Newman of Staunton, Mildred Johnson of Chicago, Ill., Charlotte Gordon of Teaneck, N.J., Claudia McCarthy of Grottoes, Shirley Ann Veney of Grottoes; one special great niece, Kathy Y. Newman of Staunton; numerous other nieces, nephews and cousins.

A funeral service will be held 1 p.m. Friday, May 8, 2009, at Johnson Funeral Service Grottoes Chapel with Pastor Roger L. Mace and the Rev. Homer L. Frazier officiating. Burial will follow in the Mt. Moriah U.M.C. Cemetery.

Friends may call at the Johnson Funeral Service, Grottoes, anytime or the family will receive friends on Thursday from 7 to 8 p.m.
