Andrew Wendell Alexander, 18, son of Wendell P. and Sara H. Alexander of 3150 Village Drive, Waynesboro, Va., passed over Thursday evening, April 11, 2002, at Hershey Medical Center, Hershey, Pa.

He was born December 11, 1983, in Waynesboro, and was a member of Verona United Methodist Church.

Andrew was currently finishing his freshman year, majoring in Political Science, at Bridgewater College, where he was the recipient of a President’s Merit Ace Academic Scholarship.

He was a 2001 graduate of Wilson Memorial High School, where he served as Student Government President, National Honor Society Vice-President, Key Club Vice-President and Senior Class Treasurer. He also earned the honor of class salutatorian for graduation and was voted as the school’s homecoming King.

Andrew was a school representative for the Virginia Model General Assembly and was a member of the Academic Challenge Team that advanced to state competition last year.

He had a wonderful time serving as manager of the JV and Varsity Girls Basketball and Volleyball teams for several years. He also loved coaching little league basketball, and these teams held a special place in his heart.

Andrew was employed as an Office Assistant at Kroger on Lew Dewitt Blvd., where he had worked for three years. He enjoyed working with and meeting many people at the store.

In Andrew's 18 short years, he touched many lives with his giving heart, beautiful smile, kind words and generous spirit. We will forever thank God for sharing him with us.

He was preceded in death by an infant sister, Faith Kathryn Alexander on June 16, 1982.

In addition to his parents, survivors include his brother, Jacob W. Alexander; grandparents, Paul and Judy Alexander of Verona and Bill and Kathy Humpherys of Hermitage; aunts and uncles, Jay and Meg Humpherys and Sharon and David Johnson, all of Waynesboro and Cindy and Sonny Roberts of Woodbridge; a special great-aunt, Mary June Brown of Waynesboro; a special great uncle, Leo Harper of San Antonio, Texas; five cousins, Patrick, William and Kathryn Johnson and Katie Beth and Bryce Humpherys, all of Waynesboro; and many other great aunts and uncles.

Andrew also leaves behind two cherished friends, James Snyder and Ryan Martin, both of Fishersville.

A memorial service in celebration of life will be conducted at 7 p.m. Monday, April 15, at Verona United Methodist Church by the Rev. David Burch. A private family burial service will be held earlier on Monday.

A time of sharing and visitation with the family will follow the service at the church.
